The former Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC), Prof Peter Okebukola, has lamented poor healthcare delivery in Nigeria and called for the training of more technologists to provide quality personnel for the health sector.
Okebukola who was the pioneer lecturer at the Alolade Oyinlola College of Health Sciences and Information Technology, Okuku, Odo-otin Local Government, Osun State, commended the proprietor of the college, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former governor for the state, for deeming it fit to establish an institution of learning.
He said Nigerian, African and the world public should expect the best-trained students from the college, saying that “the curriculum is based on what has been set by the regulator in Nigeria.
“What we have done is to top up with modern and future-looking contents for the curriculum and also ensure that it is not only theory but more of practicals in the training of community health workers, health practitioners, environmental health workers, and IT professionals that are deeply soaked in their discipline.
“We have put together professors, senior lecturers and experts in different fields that would deliver the curriculum to the best level. I and the community are looking forward to two years from now, when our product will be sought after all over the world.
“Though the infrastructure component of healthcare delivery is very poor and it is the area where we are very lacking in this country, if professionals come to teach students in their field, it provides quality personnel for the health sector,” Okebukola said.
The proprietor of the college, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, advised the students to think beyond the classroom and set good goals for their success.
“Our innovative curriculum, hands-on learning experiences, and dedicated faculty are designed to arm you with the skills and knowledge to make a lasting impact in today’s evolving world.
“As the first set of students, you have the unique opportunity to set the standards of greatness that future generations will aspire to follow. The possibilities for your future are limitless. Upon graduation, you will be highly sought-after professionals with cutting-edge expertise to thrive in your chosen fields. Your potential for national and global influence is immense, and the future is bright.
“As you embark on this exciting chapter, seize every opportunity, remain curious, and always aim for excellence. Take full advantage of our resources, mentorship, and extracurricular activities. Education goes beyond the classroom – it’s about the relationships you build, the challenges you overcome, and the goals you set,” Oyinlola said.
