The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Oludaisi Elemide, has said that the House under his leadership passed over 42 Resolutions and established a Legislative Compliance Committee in one year in the saddle.
Elemide added that the Assembly Complex equally underwent massive rehabilitation, while equipment and accessories capable of making
legislative duties easier, have been purchased since he emerged speaker in January 2024.
The Speaker stated these while briefing newsmen on the activities of the 10th Assembly under his leadership in one year.
Elemide had been elected speaker following the removal of the former Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo from office in January last year.
Speaking further, the Speaker representing Odeda State Constituency in the Assembly, explained that Legislative Compliance Committee was set up to ensure laws passed by the House are not just lying fallow, but implemented.
He added that plans were underway by the House to digitize its activities and laws that are passed, so that members of the public can have access to those laws.
While noting that legislature is the bedrock of democracy as legislators represent their respective constituents and constituency in the House, Elemide said he has upheld the democratic tenets of Separation of Power, to ensure cordial relationship between the legislature and the executive.
Recalling the removal of Oluomo as the Speaker, he noted that the constitution allows the lawmakers to elect, select and change the House leadership, stressing that lawmakers have the rights to change their leadership in a manner allowed by the constitution.
Elemide, however, said that the seat of the Speaker occupied by him has been a mixture of hot, cold and warm, pointing out that the support of his colleagues has been the sustaining force.
On the Constituency Project Funds, the Speaker said that no member of the 10th Assembly has collected funds for any constituency projects.
He disclosed that Constituency Projects were done once in the 8th and 9th Assembly by the lawmakers, while nothing of such has happened in the current 10th Assembly.
“No member of the 10th Assembly has collected funds for constituency projects. But, our constituency allowance is paid as part of our salaries which is around N40,000. This is to allow members to go visit their constitutients. The same salary we collected at the 7th Assembly is the same we collect now.
“Constituency projects were done once in the 8th and the 9th Assembly, while nothing has happened in the 10th Assembly. These are supposed to be done four times in a session”, the Speaker stated.
He, therefore, expressed optimism that funds for constituency projects will be made available before the end of the second term tenure of Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration in the state, submitting that the lawmakers will continue to represent their people effectively.
