Northern CAN Commends Zamfara Government for Swift Response to Religious Conversion Claims

Christian Association Praises State’s Clarification on Alleged Prosecution

The Northern Christian Association (CAN) has applauded the Zamfara State Government for its prompt clarification regarding alleged forced religious conversion of a woman to Christianity. The association, representing 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), emphasized the importance of vigilance and cooperation in religious matters.

Government Statement Douses Tensions

Northern CAN acknowledged the state government’s official statement refuting reports about Zainab Muhamadu’s supposed arraignment before a Shari’ah Court over religious conversion. Reverend Joseph Hayab, Northern CAN Chairman, and Bishop Muhammed Naga, Secretary General, jointly commended the government’s swift action in their Thursday statement.

The Christian leaders noted that contributions from the Grand Khadi, Hisbah Director-General, and various security agencies helped prevent potential escalation of the situation. “This collaborative approach offered much-needed clarity on a matter that could have easily spiraled into a national crisis,” the statement read.

Call for Continued Vigilance

While welcoming the clarification, Northern CAN stressed that future reports of similar nature should receive equal attention: “Should any credible information surface, it must be treated with urgency, transparency, and accountability.”

The association confirmed that based on government assurances, no legal proceedings involving Miss Zainab are currently underway, effectively putting the matter to rest unless new verified facts emerge.

Appreciation for Peacekeeping Efforts

Northern CAN specifically recognized the efforts of:

  • Department of State Services (DSS)
  • Traditional rulers
  • Youth leaders
  • Religious figures
  • Security agencies

“Their collective efforts in seeking truth and maintaining peace deserve recognition,” the statement emphasized.

Commitment to Religious Freedom

The Christian leaders reaffirmed their dedication to protecting religious rights: “CAN remains committed to uncovering truth and ending all forms of religious persecution in the region.” They urged Christians nationwide to remain calm, law-abiding, and prayerful while promising continued collaboration with security agencies and faith leaders.

The association called for stronger synergy between Northern state governments and religious bodies to address potential issues before rumors spread, emphasizing their commitment to peace, justice, and protection of fundamental religious rights for all Nigerians.
