Nigerian Army Foils Terror Plot in Taraba, Arrests Two Suspects in Coordinated Operations
Wukari, Taraba State – Troops from the 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army/Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have successfully thwarted a planned terrorist attack in Taraba State, arresting two suspects in separate intelligence-led operations on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.
Intelligence-Led Operations Yield Results
According to an official statement by Captain Olubodunde Oni, the Brigade’s Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the operations were conducted based on credible intelligence reports. The arrests took place in Wukari Local Government Area, a region that has faced security challenges in recent months.
First Arrest: Senior Bandit Syndicate Member
The first suspect, identified as 45-year-old Felix Myina from Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, was apprehended by troops stationed at the Forward Operating Base Wukari. Preliminary investigations reveal that Myina is a high-ranking member of a notorious kidnapping and banditry syndicate.
“The suspect operates under a wanted criminal kingpin known as ‘Mcianan’ or ‘Yellow’,” the military statement disclosed. This group has been linked to multiple attacks along the strategic Jootar-Wukari corridor. At the time of arrest, troops recovered a Tecno mobile phone from Myina, which is currently being analyzed for potential intelligence.
Second Arrest: Suspected ISWAP Affiliate
In a related development, troops intercepted another suspect near the Aku-Uka Palace Junction in Wukari. The individual, identified as 26-year-old Abubakar Yusuf from Borno State but residing in Gassol Local Government Area, was allegedly performing suspicious rituals at the time of arrest.
“Our alert troops intercepted Yusuf while he was engaged in activities believed to be preparatory rituals for an Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attack,” the statement explained. The military described the arrest as a preventive measure against potential terrorist activities in the region.
Incriminating Evidence Recovered
Security forces recovered several unusual items from Yusuf, including:
- A dead chicken
- Nine unhatched rotten eggs
- An animal horn
- A bottle containing unidentified powdered substance
- Pieces of fresh meat
Military sources indicate that Yusuf allegedly confessed the ritual was intended to “spiritually tie” the town, making it easier for terrorist elements to operate. “This suggests sophisticated psychological operations by terrorist groups to intimidate communities,” a security analyst commented.
Ongoing Investigations
Both suspects are currently in military custody undergoing intensive interrogation. The Nigerian Army has assured the public that investigations will be thorough to uncover potential networks and prevent future attacks.
This successful operation comes as part of the military’s intensified efforts under Operation Whirl Stroke to combat terrorism, banditry, and other security threats in Nigeria’s North Central region. Security forces have increased surveillance and intelligence gathering in recent months, leading to several high-profile arrests.
Community Reactions
Local residents have expressed relief at the arrests while calling for sustained military presence. “We sleep better knowing our security forces are vigilant,” said a Wukari community leader who requested anonymity.
Security experts have praised the intelligence-driven approach that led to these arrests, noting that preemptive operations are crucial in counter-terrorism efforts. However, they caution that terrorist groups continue to evolve their tactics, requiring constant adaptation by security forces.
The Nigerian Army has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies, emphasizing that community cooperation remains vital in the fight against terrorism.
