Streaming platform Netflix has denied allegations that it intends to leave Nigeria after reports of its departure hit the internet.
The rumour, which sent shockwaves in the Nigerian entertainment industry, gained traction following a viral statement by famous Nollywood director, Kunle Afolayan.
In a widely circulated video, Afolayan said that Netflix purportedly cancelled numerous commissioned projects, prompting questions about the company’s long-term commitment to Nollywood.
He expressed disappointment that despite the global success of Nollywood films, Netflix appeared dissatisfied with their local returns.
In response to the outcry, Netflix eventually addressed the notion in an email by its public relations firm, Hill & Knowlton Strategies.
Edafe Onoriode, the Group Account Director, reaffirmed the company’s continued support for Nigeria’s creative economy.
He highlighted that Netflix has no intentions to exit Nollywood and instead reiterated its commitment to developing the industry’s enormous potential.
“We are not exiting Nigeria. We will continue to invest in Nigerian stories to delight our members,” the Netflix spokesperson stated.a
