From Idu Jude Abuja
The lawmaker representing Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC)/Bwari Federal Constituency of the FCT, Honourable Joshua Obika, has said that the time has come for a party with good intentions and economic strategies to take over the government, following the failure of the ruling APC.
Hon. Obika made this remark while addressing the Labour Party youth wing at its annual delegate conference held in Abuja on Wednesday.
The lawmaker, who strongly condemned the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his economic team, stated that the Labour Party’s best opportunity to take over is in 2027, in order to address the anti-human and dehumanising policies of the ruling party.
Consequently, he reassured stakeholders, saying:
“Project 2027 begins now. If we wait until the time comes before we go to the field and start doing something, we won’t achieve anything.”
Further addressing the youths and reawakening their consciousness, Hon. Obika stated:
“This is a clarion call for the youths to start making good use of their youthfulness and demographic power to take over government at the ward levels, local government levels, and state levels. I don’t know about some of you from other states, but for us who are in the FCT, we have chapters before the wards, even when it is not constitutional. But that system of galvanising people was what gave us the highest votes during the parliamentary elections.
“That is why, in Nigeria today, I remain a member of the National Assembly with 201,000 votes, the highest number cast. That is the kind of number that wins a governorship election. So, we can replicate that in our different states come 2027 if the foundation is solidly laid right away.”
Hon. Obika, in support of the youth wing of the party, promised the support of Labour members of parliament to enable the wing to carry out its grassroots mobilisation assignment.
He also pledged to rally other members of parliament to organise a Labour Party youth summit in 2026, ahead of the general elections in 2027.
He further advised that the Labour Party has become a “beautiful bride” that everyone wishes to court, saying:
“My advice here is that our party has become an admiration of many. There are so many parties out there begging for membership, but no one cares to approach them. But here, everyone wants to belong, and that is a good sign that people shouldn’t see negatively.
“See it as proof that people appreciate that the Labour Party has come to stay and that LP is out to take over. That is why the struggle is there. You should see positivity in it rather than negativity.”
