LP disowns Ogun interim executive committee

The national leadership of the Labour Party (LP) has distanced itself from a self-proclaimed group calling itself the Interim Executive Committee (IEC) in Ogun State. The party described the group’s activities as an attempt to usurp the legitimate leadership structure in the state.

In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party emphasised that the only legally recognised leadership in Ogun State is the Lookman Abiodun Jagun-led Caretaker Committee. The committee, according to Ifoh, was duly constituted by the National Executive Committee (NEC), the party’s highest decision-making body.

“The so-called Interim Executive Committee is an aberration, unknown to both the constitution of the party and the national leadership. Its members are mere usurpers, seeking to hijack the party’s structure for selfish gain,” Ifoh stated.

Reaffirming the party’s commitment to constitutional governance, Ifoh reminded members that the LP operates under a well-defined structure and constitution, which all members are expected to follow.

“The party does not permit or encourage members to arrogate powers and functions to themselves without recourse to the constitution or the national leadership,” he added.

The statement urged party faithful in Ogun State to remain vigilant and reject the antics of the unauthorised IEC.

“The Interim Executive Committee has no backing from the national leadership and should not be recognised or supported by any member,” Ifoh warned.

As part of efforts to strengthen its structure, the party called on members and prospective members to participate in the ongoing e-membership registration and revalidation exercise. This initiative, Ifoh explained, is crucial for members to actively engage in party activities, including the nationwide congresses set to commence in February 2025.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to unity, accountability, and adherence to its guiding principles, as it continues to build a formidable political movement across the country.
