Labour Party Factional Chairman Exits, Questions Peter Obi’s Leadership Capacity

Party Chieftain Cites Unresolved Crisis and Disappointment in Presidential Candidate

The Labour Party faced another setback on Thursday as Callistus Okafor, one of its factional national chairmen, announced his resignation from the party.

Okafor attributed his decision to the party’s prolonged leadership disputes and dissatisfaction with 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi’s handling of the crisis.

Breaking Point for Factional Leader

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Okafor revealed that his faction’s National Working Committee and National Executive Council had thoroughly deliberated before reaching this conclusion.

“My team and I carefully examined the ongoing crises in the Labour Party that have persisted for seven years,” Okafor stated. “We wondered how much longer this could continue.”

Criticism of Peter Obi’s Leadership

The departing chairman expressed particular disappointment with Peter Obi, suggesting that the presidential candidate’s failure to resolve internal conflicts raised serious questions about his ability to govern Nigeria effectively.

“When Peter Obi joined us in 2022, what did he do? He supported Abure, who has now become his archenemy,” Okafor remarked pointedly.

New Political Direction

Okafor announced his faction’s transition to a new political platform called Team Wazobia Nigeria, declaring: “We are moving from the Labour Party today. This crisis has reached a point where it’s no longer healthy for the party.”

The development marks another chapter in the Labour Party’s ongoing internal struggles, which have intensified since the 2023 elections.
