Justice Lekan Ogunmoye Sworn In as Ekiti State’s Sixth Chief Judge

Governor Oyebanji Officiates Historic Judicial Appointment

Ekiti State has ushered in a new era for its judiciary with the formal inauguration of Justice Lekan Ogunmoye as the state’s sixth substantive Chief Judge. The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Governor’s Office Conference Hall in Ado Ekiti on Monday, marks a significant milestone in the state’s legal history.

From Acting to Substantive Role

Justice Ogunmoye had been serving as Acting Chief Judge since November 5, 2024, following the unfortunate demise of his predecessor, Hon. Justice Oyewole Adeyeye. His elevation to the substantive position came after the Ekiti State House of Assembly confirmed his appointment on July 3, 2025, based on recommendations from the state’s judicial committee.

Governor Reaffirms Commitment to Judicial Independence

During the ceremony, Governor Biodun Oyebanji delivered a powerful address reaffirming his administration’s dedication to maintaining a strong, independent judiciary. The governor emphasized the critical role of the judiciary in Nigeria’s democratic framework, describing it as “the last hope of the common man.”

“The judiciary holds a sacred position in our democracy,” Governor Oyebanji stated. “It is not merely a symbol of authority but the pillar that ensures equality before the law. This position demands not only legal acumen but also impeccable character and administrative competence.”

Pledges for Judicial Reform and Support

The governor outlined his administration’s plans to support the judiciary through comprehensive reforms, improved welfare packages, and infrastructure development. These initiatives aim to strengthen the justice system and enhance its capacity to serve Ekiti citizens effectively.

A Call to Uphold Judicial Integrity

Governor Oyebanji praised Justice Ogunmoye’s distinguished career and impeccable professional record, urging the new Chief Judge to maintain the high standards that have characterized Ekiti’s judiciary. The governor specifically called for improved access to justice and the delivery of timely rulings that align with international best practices.

“Your Lordship,” Governor Oyebanji addressed the new Chief Judge, “history will not judge you by the applause of today, but by the legacy you leave behind. May it be said that under your leadership, the judiciary of Ekiti State attained new heights, dispensing justice without fear or favour.”

A Career of Distinction

Justice Ogunmoye brings nearly two decades of judicial experience to his new role, having served in various capacities including State Counsel, Solicitor-General, and High Court judge. His eight-month tenure as Acting Chief Judge demonstrated his capability to lead the state’s judiciary effectively.

“I urge Your Lordship to draw upon your wealth of experience and impeccable service record as you lead our judiciary,” Governor Oyebanji remarked. “Let your decisions reflect not only the letter of the law but the enduring spirit of justice.”

The Weight of Judicial Responsibility

The governor emphasized the profound responsibility inherent in the office of Chief Judge, noting that it represents a sacred trust from the people of Ekiti State. He cautioned against allowing external influences or personal sentiments to affect judicial decisions, stressing the need for impartiality and fairness in all court proceedings.

As Justice Ogunmoye assumes his new role, legal observers anticipate continued progress in Ekiti’s judicial system, with particular focus on case management efficiency, judicial accountability, and enhanced access to justice for all citizens.
