Toyin Lawani is a celebrity fashion designer, philanthropist and serial entrepreneur. She is the CEO of Tiannah’s Place Empire, a group comprising 33 businesses.

Tiannah’s Empire, a reality television show focused on her life, was produced and distributed by Ebony Life Studio.

She also featured in the TV show, The Real Housewives of Lagos. She has large stakes in various sectors and is an inspiration to many upcoming businesswomen.

Toyin was at the ongoing Africa Fashion Week London, and spoke with Sunday Sun at the venue about why she slowed down in public appearances and lots more.

You have been quiet these days, what’s up?

I almost died a year and half ago. I had to take time off to take care of myself. I had a spine surgery, I injured my spine. I couldn’t  talk; it’s a long story, but I’m happy I’m getting back on my feet. I said it publicly that I was going to take some time off. I said I would be off for two years, three months from now, but I am back. I’m planning a big comeback, by God’s grace. I just thank God for my life. There’s so much going on in Nigeria right now. The health  care system is not the best. The government needs to do something about it. Imagine people that cannot afford to travel out to check on their health or get better care, what would they do? I know a lot of people have been sending messages via my DM, prayers, that they miss me, they miss my  craziness. They shouldn’t  worry, I’m bigger and better than when I left.

What are we expecting from you when you come back fully?

You will see drama, drama and more drama. Excellence as usual! I am taking the brand international. An international platform is what and where I always aspire to be. I have been 25 years in the industry. It’s not a joke. Consistency is the key. When I started styling, I can assure you, there was nobody else. There was nothing like ‘stylist’. That’s why they call me Queen of Fashion till date. You have to create a niche for yourself, for what you do. You have to stand out so that people will look up to you in the industry. Now, we have many young, good, talented designers all over the place. Nigerians are doing very well. I was so surprised when I went international. I really didn’t know how big that name Tiannah’s Empire was until I came out here. Everywhere in London, you hear, ‘Oh my God, you are Toyin Lawani  of the Real Housewives of Lagos?’ People know us, they love us, they love my craziness, they love what I have to give. I would advise anybody out there, if you have a dream or stuff you want to do, just go ahead. Your crowd is out there. Like I say, I don’t design for society, I design for the world and I have been able to consistently do that for over 20 years. It’s not a joke to still remain in fashion. Fashion is a necessity, but style remains. I have done four different courses in arts since I came to the UK.

It looks like you have lost some weight…?

Yes, I did. It was when I was sick. I am happy with my new stature. I’m healthy, fit and sexy.

What prompted you to go into acting?

Even Dangote is still looking for money. Even Coca-Cola is still doing adverts. No matter how big you are out there, put what you do out there. On the Real Housewives, I use the platform to sell my brand, my empire. Before, they called me Madam 33 Businesses. I carry my businesses on my head. I don’t care what anybody says. The Real Housewives of Lagos is an international platform. So, you have to sell and put yourself out there. You have to put everything  you do in people’s faces.

What lessons have you learnt about life?

Omo, put yourself first o! Nobody gat you, you gat yourself! Always put what you love doing first because, if you let your talent die, it goes with you. Put your talent into your kids, into the next generation, because they are your next generation, nurture your legacy.

What brought you into prominence?

I think it was my style and entrepreneurial spirit. When I started Tiannah’s Empire, no business in Lagos was called ‘empire’. A lot of young girls wanted to be like me. Those days, they wanted to run the kind of businesses I was running. Who is this woman that is running over 30 businesses, and doing it effortlessly? Then there is my style. I can create unimaginable pieces. Whoever created anything with a pot, I was the first. The way my mind thinks is different. I didn’t just want fame, I wanted money. Fame and money work hand in hand. When you are different and outstanding,  you will get fame. So, chase your talent, chase money and the fame that comes with it. Don’t let it get to your head though.
