Legendary Hollywood actor Denzel Washington has shared how his abuse of wine did damage to his body.
The Oscar-winning Gladiator 2 star who is regarded as one of the best actors of his generation opened up about being addicted to alcohol in an interview with Esquire.
While revealing that he experimented with substances in his youth, Washington was quick to add that he never became dependent on hard drugs or liquor, though he developed an affinity for wine.
“I haven’t had a thimble’s worth since giving up alcohol at age 60. Wine is very tricky. It’s very slow. It ain’t like, boom, all of a sudden.
“I learned to drink the best. So I’m gonna drink my ’61s and my ’82s,” he said.
Washington stated further that as the drinking continued, he limited himself to two bottles a day, adding that it never interfered with his work.
“I never drank while I was working or preparing,” the actor shared.
Speaking further, he disclosed that after completing film projects, he would return to drinking wine for months before cleaning up again to resume work.
“I’ve done a lot of damage to the body. We’ll see. I’ve been clean,” he noted.
“Things are opening up for me now — like being seventy. It’s real. And it’s okay. If I get another thirty, what do I want to do? I’m doing the best I can,” Washington added.
