The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mariya Mahmoud, has called for greater investment in Nigeria’s film industry, describing it as an economic and cultural necessity.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 14th Zuma International Film Festival, held at Jabi Lake Mall, Abuja, Mahmoud, represented by her Special Assistant on Social Development Secretariat, Helen Zamani, urged government bodies, private investors, and stakeholders to collaborate for the sector’s growth.
She described the film industry as a vital medium for preserving cultural heritage and shaping societal narratives. “The Zuma Film Festival is not just an event; it is a movement—a convergence of voices, ideas, and visions that shape the narrative of who we are and where we are going,” she stated.
Highlighting the transformative potential of the industry, Mahmoud noted that filmmakers must embrace technological advancements such as virtual reality and artificial intelligence to remain relevant while preserving the authenticity of African narratives.
“The power of film is much more than entertainment. It is a mirror reflecting our dreams and struggles,” she said, acknowledging challenges such as funding shortages, inadequate infrastructure, and copyright issues that hinder the industry’s growth.
The festival’s theme, “Digital Renaissance: Embracing the Future!”, was underscored by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation, Ali Nuhu, who highlighted the transformative impact of digital technology on filmmaking and storytelling. Nuhu described the Zuma Film Festival as a showcase of African creativity and innovation, promoting Nigeria’s cultural heritage on the global stage.
Mahmoud commended the festival organisers for providing a platform for emerging talents and innovative storytelling, expressing optimism about the industry’s potential to achieve global recognition.
The opening ceremony set an exciting tone for the festival, celebrating culture through film and reaffirming the Zuma Film Festival’s role in shaping the future of African cinema.
