Abuja, Nigeria – Political analyst Kelly Agaba, coordinator of the Citizens Coalition, has revealed that former President Muhammadu Buhari’s potential support in the 2027 presidential election will largely depend on his loyalists’ preferences.

Buhari’s Decision Hinges on Followers’ Loyalty

In an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, Agaba explained that while Buhari might naturally support the APC (the party that launched his political career), his ultimate decision will be swayed by where his followers place their allegiance.

“Given the current dynamics, it seems Buhari’s stance will be influenced by his followers. A significant majority, around 90%, of Buhari’s loyalists are investing their trust and resources in the coalition engineered by Nasir el-Rufai.”

The Emerging Political Coalition

The political landscape is shifting as former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai, ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and other prominent figures work to form a coalition against President Bola Tinubu’s APC government.

Northern Influence and Political Calculations

Agaba emphasized Buhari’s substantial influence in Northern Nigeria, noting that his endorsement could significantly impact the 2027 election outcome:

“Buhari’s influence in the North is substantial, and his decision will have a significant impact on the 2027 presidential election. The APC’s efforts to woo him back suggest they value his support.”

Recent Political Developments

The analysis comes amid reports of el-Rufai’s recent visit to Buhari’s Kaduna residence alongside Atiku and other politicians. This follows el-Rufai’s March 2025 defection from APC to SDP, citing ideological differences with the ruling party.

Why Tinubu Should Be Concerned

Senator Ali Ndume has warned President Tinubu to be wary of Buhari’s political position, noting the former president commands a massive following in Northern Nigeria that could determine the 2027 election outcome.
