The prolonged leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly seems to be finally coming to an end.

Mojisola Meranda, who made history as the first female Speaker of the House, has announced her resignation during a live plenary session, just 50 days into her tenure.

Her resignation paves the way for a new Speaker, and reportedly, Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated to the position following Meranda’s departure.

Meranda read out her resignation letter at the Monday plenary, stating: “This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.”

Persecondnews reports that she was sworn in as the Deputy Speaker immediately after her resignation, while Mudashiru Obasa reclaimed his position as the Speaker.

Persecondnews recalls that Meranda had previously taken over as Speaker on January 13, 2025, following Obasa’s impeachment due to allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of power.

Despite her brief tenure, lawmakers praised her effective leadership and her ability to foster a positive atmosphere in the Assembly, a testament to her capabilities as a leader.

Meranda resigned alongside all principal officers who were elected with her, including Nojeed Fatai, the Deputy Speaker and Sanni Okanlawon, the Chief Whip.
