SGF George Akume Urges Northern Politicians to Postpone Presidential Ambitions Until 2031
Kaduna, Nigeria – Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has called on political leaders from Northern Nigeria to delay their presidential aspirations until 2031, arguing that President Bola Tinubu deserves a second term in office.
Akume’s Remarks at Kaduna Forum
Akume made these comments during a two-day interactive forum titled “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizens’ Engagement for National Unity”, organized by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Kaduna on Tuesday.
Praising the event’s focus on strengthening dialogue between citizens and government, Akume vigorously defended President Tinubu’s performance since taking office in May 2023. He described the administration’s achievements as “fundamental and remarkable” across multiple sectors.
Defending Tinubu’s Record
“President Tinubu promised impartial governance, and he has delivered on that promise,” Akume stated. “His administration has made significant strides in national security, agricultural revitalization, food security, and infrastructure development nationwide.”
The SGF specifically highlighted the controversial fuel subsidy removal as a necessary reform that has freed up resources for state-level development projects. He framed this decision as part of Tinubu’s broader “Renewed Hope” agenda – which he characterized as more than just campaign rhetoric.
Direct Appeal to Northern Leaders
Turning his attention to political leaders from Nigeria’s northern regions, Akume issued a pointed message: “Wait till 2031 before pursuing presidential ambitions.” He warned against any actions that might disrupt the current administration’s progress.
“I urge patriotic politicians not to align with groups seeking to derail President Tinubu’s developmental strides,” Akume cautioned. “The narrative that the North is being marginalized is simply untrue.”
Highlighting Northern Development Projects
To support his argument, Akume listed several major infrastructure projects benefiting northern states, including:
- The Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway
- The proposed Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Taraba road project
“These projects demonstrate the administration’s commitment to balanced national development,” Akume emphasized. “President Tinubu has positively impacted all regions, including the North.”
Call for Continued Support
Concluding his remarks, the SGF appealed for sustained political support for the Tinubu administration. “The president has performed well in his first term,” Akume stated. “With continued national backing, he will achieve even more in a second term.”
The forum brought together government officials, civil society representatives, and traditional leaders to assess progress on campaign promises and strengthen citizen-government engagement.
