President of the Senate Godswill Obot Akpabio has allayed reports that operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS, occupied the entire premises of the National Assembly over an alleged plot by some Lawmakers to unseat the Leadership of the Senate.
Reacting to the viral news report during Wednesday’s plenary , Akpabio described the reports as “Fake News” saying that the report is AI generated and that the Senate under his leadership remains “Stable” and as such the impeachment Plot cannot arise.
According to the news report Speculations swirled that some aggrieved Northern Senators,(allegedly dissatisfied with President Bola Tinubu, are reportedly reviving an earlier attempt to remove Akpabio from office.
Shortly after concluding the confirmation of Federal commissioners for the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC , Akpabio addressed the news report.
According to the Senate President the impeachment Plot is a mirage lamenting that fake news is gradually taking over the media space.
“The news is fake news that the DSS surrounded the National Assembly over a Report to impeach the Principal Officers of the Senate, The Senate is stable and the issue of impeachment does not come up”.
“But are we here sitting down and doing our work or should we refer the Fake news to Senator Ya’radua’s committee on Army? Let us refer it to the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Akpabio jokingly asked.
“It is part of what we pass through on a daily basis. Sometimes it’s either they use AI.
“I learnt that they could click an AI and news will start trending to drive traffic and I am sure the traffic for this fake news is massive by now,” he said.
“There is no limit to what online publications cannot do. This is total fake news and the impeachment of principal officers did not arise and we are all here in the National Assembly without any controversial issues.
The Senate President later referred the matter to the Committee on Special Duties for investigation.
The report of the investigation is to be presented to the Committee of the Whole within 24 hours.
Since the inauguration of the 10th Senate in June 2023, the Akpabio led leadership has continued to be rocked with impeachment speculations.
