Former First Lady of Ondo State, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu has been criticised for calling Nigeria “a zoo”.
She made the remark on X on Wednesday, November 13.
Anyanwu-Akeredolu compared the US presidential election to Nigeria’s, noting how quickly votes were counted in the recently concluded US election.
“2023 Nigerian Presidential Election,
Total Votes Cast: 25 million, Counting Duration: 5 days
“2024 U.S Presidential Election, Total Votes Cast: 155 million, Counting Duration: Approx. 10 hours
“Moral: When dishonesty is prioritised, simple things become difficult.”
Following a barrage of critical comments on her post, she made a follow-up post: “I made an honest but harmless observation on Nigerian and US presidential elections. Twitter is now on fire. Truth hurts and hurts with tribal colouration.”
She added, “If the 2023 election presidential benefitted you as an individual or group, was that the best Nigeria could offer? Alas, they turned it into a tribal war of words. Nigeria is irredeemable! So sad.”
Responding to a comment on her initial post, she remarked, “Very bitter indeed! Who will rescue Nigeria? What a zoo country!”
However, the former First Lady’s comment drew even more criticism, with one Tunde Akerele stating, “Betty, you are a disgrace to yourself and to humanity.”
One Femi Omogunwa said, “Your interest, intents were not opaque to our discerning minds back then. We were just waiting for a moment of truth like this when you will understand that power is transient. Mama, enjoy your retirement.”
A political operative, Alli Moshood said, “It wasn’t a zoo when you were actively First Lady? It wasn’t a zoo when you contested severally to represent your people? It is simple, you are just pained to no longer have access to the perks of power. Such a shame.”
One @igeseun17 wrote, “But you never tweeted this 4 years ago when you guys were still in power.
“It’s well, but you’re still in the same Nigeria that’s irredeemable.”
Another commentator, Noah Sherif said, “This woman is suffering from the trauma of power. It’s well with your soul.”
