From Fred Ezeh, Abuja

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), waterborne diseases occur when bacteria, viruses, and parasites contaminate water sources due to poor sanitation, improper sewage disposal, or agricultural runoff.

Consuming or coming into contact with contaminated water can lead to illnesses such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery, resulting in symptoms like diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration.

Protect yourself and your family with these simple steps:

  • Drink only safe, treated, or boiled water.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating.
  • Practice proper hand hygiene—wash with soap and water after using the toilet and before meals.
  • Store water in clean, covered containers.
  • Avoid open defecation to maintain a clean environment.

Clean water equals better health. Stay safe, stay healthy!
